Cash on Delivery on Shopify UAE: Setup and Reducing RTO

Enable cash on delivery as a manual payment method in Shopify and agree collection and remittance with your courier. COD orders are unpaid until payment is recorded. To reduce avoidable return-to-origin (RTO), confirm contact details and delivery intent, set realistic delivery expectations, track failure reasons and restrict unsupported delivery situations. No app can guarantee zero RTO.

Configure COD as a payment and delivery workflow

In Settings → Payments, use the available manual payment method for cash on delivery and write clear instructions. Explain the amount due, eligible delivery areas and any disclosed charge. Test what the shopper sees on mobile and in order confirmation messages.

Shopify's documentation says manual payments do not incur Shopify third-party transaction fees. That does not make COD free: the courier can charge collection, delivery, remittance or return fees. Keep these costs in the order economics and never confuse 'fulfilled' with 'cash received'.

Improve order quality before dispatch

Collect a usable phone number and delivery address, including building or villa information and useful location instructions. Use consent-aware confirmation messages or a call where the order needs clarification. Do not delay every low-risk order with unnecessary friction.

Publish accurate delivery windows and product information. A customer who expected a different size, total or delivery date may reject a correctly shipped parcel. Identify repeat failed deliveries with fair, proportionate policies rather than crude assumptions about neighbourhoods or customer groups.

Measure RTO using a defined denominator

Define RTO as parcels returned to origin after attempted delivery and calculate the rate consistently against dispatched parcels for the same cohort. Separate cancellations before dispatch, customer returns after delivery and carrier failures. Combining them hides the cause.

For example, 10 RTO parcels from 100 dispatched COD parcels is a 10% RTO rate. If a later comparable cohort has 8 from 100, it is 8%—a two-percentage-point reduction, not proof that a particular app caused it. These numbers are illustrative, not Vexa client results or a UAE benchmark.

Close the finance and stock loop

Match courier remittances to orders, collected amounts and fees. Investigate short or delayed remittances before treating the batch as reconciled. Define who updates payment status and who approves adjustments so warehouse staff do not accidentally mark unpaid cash as received.

Restock returned goods only after receipt and inspection. Record the reason, delivery attempts and condition. Review patterns with the carrier and change one process at a time—confirmation, address capture or delivery messaging—so you can see what helps your own operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I mark COD orders paid when dispatched?

No. Follow your agreed cash-receipt and reconciliation procedure. Dispatch is not payment.

Can I charge a COD fee?

Confirm applicable rules, provider capabilities and transparent customer disclosure before implementing a fee. Do not add unexpected charges after the order is placed.

Should every store offer COD?

No. Evaluate customer demand, contribution margin, courier operations and your ability to reconcile cash. It is a business decision, not a requirement of Shopify.
