Shopify Payments and Payment Gateways in the UAE
Shopify Payments is in early access in the UAE and available only to certain merchants, according to Shopify's current country documentation. A blanket 'No' is outdated, but a blanket 'Yes, for every UAE store' is also wrong. Check eligibility in your Shopify admin; if it is unavailable, evaluate a supported third-party gateway for your business and checkout requirements.

Does Shopify Payments Work in the UAE?
A UAE merchant can also use a compatible third-party payment provider. Shopify states that more than 100 credit-card providers are supported globally, but the list shown to a store depends on country, business details, and provider availability. A provider appearing in an old article or another merchant's store is not proof that it is available for a new UAE account today.
Payment architecture belongs in the initial scope for a Shopify development project in the UAE. It affects checkout flow, refunds, currencies, subscriptions, reporting, fraud operations, accounting, and the true cost of every order.
Shopify Payments UAE Eligibility and Documents
Shopify's UAE requirements page currently lists a company registration number, an eligible business type and activity, identity and business verification, and a compatible bank account among the core requirements. The details entered in Shopify must match the official documents. Some business categories are prohibited, and non-profit organisations are not currently eligible.
| Check | Current official requirement | Merchant action |
|---|---|---|
| Plan access | Early access; Advanced or Plus required for access, with limited access on other plans | Check the store's own admin and current plan before budgeting |
| Business registration | A UAE company registration number (CRN) is required | Match the registered name, CRN, address, and business type exactly |
| Business documents | A UAE trade licence or freelancer permit is required; LLC structures can require further documents | Prepare current, complete originals without edits |
| AED payout account | UAE-based AED checking account that supports domestic and international transfers, with an AE IBAN | Confirm account type and beneficiary name with the bank |
| Business eligibility | Some businesses and services are prohibited or unsupported | Review the current UAE terms before committing to the provider |
Verification is a compliance process, not a theme setting. Build time into the launch plan for document collection, review, possible follow-up questions, and a fallback payment route. Never schedule launch around an assumed approval date.
Online Methods, Shopify POS, and UAE Payouts
Shopify's current UAE payment-method page lists Visa, Mastercard, and Maestro for card payments. It also lists Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Shop Pay as accelerated checkouts. These methods are automatically activated with Shopify Payments, subject to the account and customer's device or wallet eligibility.
For online payouts, Shopify states that the minimum UAE settlement time is five business days and that banks can then take additional processing time. The current minimum payout amount is AED 20. New accounts can begin with a longer settlement time. Businesses should model cash flow against the actual settlement shown in the admin, not against a marketing assumption.
Retailers planning online and in-store sales should review Vexa's Shopify POS setup service for the UAE and the UAE POS rollout guide alongside the payment decision.
How to Compare Shopify Payment Gateways in the UAE
There is no responsible universal ranking of the “best” UAE gateway. The right provider depends on merchant eligibility, customer countries, currencies, average order value, refund pattern, recurring payments, fraud profile, settlement needs, and technical support. Compare written terms and a tested checkout, not only the headline percentage.
| Decision area | Questions to ask | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Does the provider accept this legal entity, activity, products, and sales geography? | Written approval criteria and prohibited-business terms |
| Checkout | Is the flow direct or external, mobile-friendly, bilingual, and compatible with required wallets? | Test transactions on real devices in Arabic and English |
| Currencies | Which presentment and settlement currencies are supported, and when is conversion applied? | Provider currency table and sample settlement report |
| Operations | How do capture, partial refund, void, chargeback, and subscription flows work? | Documented capability plus end-to-end test cases |
| Settlement | What is the schedule, reserve policy, minimum payout, and failed-payout process? | Merchant agreement and first live payout reconciliation |
| Support | Who owns incidents across Shopify, the gateway, the bank, and the implementation partner? | Escalation contacts and response commitments |
Calculate the Total Cost, Not One Gateway Rate
The order-level cost can include the provider's processing rate, fixed fees, international-card or currency conversion charges, refund treatment, chargeback fees, reserves, and Shopify's third-party transaction fee. Shopify says the third-party fee depends on the plan and can apply when an external provider is used. Current figures belong in a merchant-specific spreadsheet sourced from the Shopify admin and provider proposal.
- Model domestic, international, wallet, and subscription transactions separately.
- Include failed-payment recovery, refunds, chargebacks, reserves, and payout timing.
- Compare effective cost at current and forecast order volume, not at one sample order.
- Record which fees come from Shopify and which come from the payment provider.
- Recheck pricing before contract signature because plan and provider terms can change.
Use the Shopify pricing guide for UAE projects to place gateway costs inside a first-year store budget rather than treating them as an isolated checkout expense.
A Safer UAE Payment Implementation Checklist
- Confirm the legal entity, activity, market, currencies, products, and expected volumes.
- Check the payment options shown in the merchant's Shopify admin.
- Obtain written commercial terms and settlement requirements from shortlisted providers.
- Configure test and live credentials through merchant-owned accounts.
- Test success, decline, 3D Secure, cancellation, partial refund, full refund, and chargeback workflows.
- Verify analytics, order statuses, customer emails, finance exports, and reconciliation.
- Document support ownership and keep a launch fallback that has already been tested.
Vexa can turn these requirements into a checkout and operations plan, configure the eligible route, test it with the wider store, and train the people who will manage exceptions.
