Shopify POS lets a retailer manage in-person selling alongside its Shopify catalogue and inventory. Separate the till app from the card terminal
The POS app manages the sale, items and order record. The payment device processes the card transaction. Shopify's documentation distinguishes supported integrated readers from external readers used where integrated processing is unavailable. UAE Shopify Payments online early access must not be interpreted as universal in-person card-reader support.
Confirm hardware compatibility and local processing support before importing a device. If an external terminal is used, agree how the amount is entered, how the payment is recorded in POS and how refunds are handled. Two systems may need reconciliation even when the customer experiences one checkout.
Map locations, products and stock
Create the correct retail and warehouse locations and assign inventory deliberately. Confirm barcode quality, variants, taxes, price rules and which items are available for in-person sale. A shared catalogue does not eliminate the need for accurate receiving, transfers and stock counts.
For a business with Abu Dhabi and other UAE branches, define permissions and routines for transfers, returns and damaged goods. Staff should know whether an item can be returned at a different branch and which system updates the sellable quantity.
Choose POS features and budget the complete setup
Compare the included POS capabilities with POS Pro according to actual store needs. The reviewed UAE pricing page lists POS Pro at USD 89 per month per location, approximately AED 326.85, in addition to the applicable Shopify plan; confirm billing terms and current inclusions.
Hardware, payment processing, receipt supplies, networking, setup and training are additional budget lines. Do not calculate total cost from the app subscription alone. Confirm the exact tablet, scanner, printer and terminal combination with the vendors before purchase.
Train the team before the first trading day
Practice opening, selling, discounts, voids, refunds, split operational scenarios and end-of-day reconciliation using the approved device setup. Test a card decline and a connectivity issue so staff know the safe fallback. Do not promise offline payment capabilities that have not been validated for that hardware and provider.
Agree a support owner and a written closeout procedure. Reconcile POS orders, the payment-terminal batch, cash and stock movements. A successful first sale is only one acceptance test; the end-of-day totals and next-day support process also need to work.
