How Does 5% VAT Work on Shopify in the UAE?

For a VAT-registered UAE business, standard-rated supplies generally carry 5% VAT. Shopify can calculate tax using your configuration, but it does not register the business with the FTA or determine every product's tax treatment. Confirm registration and classification with your accountant, then test tax-inclusive prices, invoices, shipping, discounts and refunds. Not every sale is automatically standard-rated.

Confirm registration before changing tax collection

The FTA lists AED 375,000 as the mandatory threshold for taxable supplies and imports, measured over the previous twelve months or expected in the next thirty days. The voluntary threshold is AED 187,500, with qualifying taxable expenses also relevant. Special rules apply to non-resident businesses; do not apply the domestic threshold mechanically to every seller.

Do not turn on VAT collection merely because competitors show tax. Establish your registration status, effective date and TRN first. This guide explains store implementation, not personalised tax advice. Have a UAE tax professional approve treatment before launch.

Understand inclusive versus exclusive pricing

For a standard-rated AED 100 net sale, VAT is AED 5 and the customer total is AED 105. If AED 105 is already a tax-inclusive price, the VAT portion is 105 × 5 ÷ 105 = AED 5. Multiplying the inclusive total by 5% would overstate its tax component.

Document whether catalogue prices include VAT before importing products. Test rounding at both line and order level, especially where discounts or partial refunds apply. The examples here show arithmetic for a standard-rated sale, not a classification decision for your products.

Configure Shopify's UAE tax region carefully

In Shopify's tax and duties settings, review the United Arab Emirates region, the available tax service and your registered tax details. Where manual tax settings apply, configure the relevant rate and price-inclusion behaviour. Review taxable product flags, shipping treatment and overrides rather than adding a blanket surcharge through theme code.

A storefront setting does not make an invoice FTA-compliant by itself. Ask your accountant to approve the invoice template, business identity and TRN fields, numbering, tax breakdown and any required customer details. Preserve the records and export process your finance team needs.

Test more than a simple domestic order

Check a standard-rated order, a discount, a shipping charge, a cancellation and a partial return. Compare Shopify, the payment provider and the accounting record so collected totals and recorded revenue are not confused with each other.

Exports, designated-zone scenarios, exempt or zero-rated items and mixed baskets need separate review. Do not simply remove tax because a customer selects another GCC country. Confirm the transaction's treatment and required evidence, then configure the approved rule and retain the supporting records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there one Shopify 'FTA-compliant' switch?

No. Tax calculation, registration, invoice content, transaction classification and recordkeeping are separate responsibilities.

Does Shopify remit UAE VAT for my business?

Do not assume it does. Your business remains responsible for its registration, returns and payment obligations unless a specific arrangement explicitly says otherwise.

Is 5% charged on every order?

No. Treatment depends on the supply and circumstances. Obtain professional confirmation for exceptions and cross-border transactions.
