Any size works
Upload images at any size. Shopify creates resized copies for every screen, so large originals do not slow your store. About 2000 px on the long side is plenty for artworks; 2500 px for full-width banners.
Theme-wide image settings
Theme settings > Images
- Image shape and Image display: the default shape (adapt, 4:5, square, 3:2, 16:9) and whether images are cropped or shown whole. Automatic lets each section decide. Most sections have their own Image shape and Image display, which override these.
- Border width and Border color, and an optional background behind images (useful for works with transparent backgrounds).
- Image credit line: a credit shown in the footer, for example "Artwork images courtesy National Gallery of Art, Washington, CC0". For a full list of credits, use a page with the
creditstemplate. - While pictures load: Fade in, Shimmer, a custom loading image, or nothing.
Sections with their own image settings include Shop by room, Maker index and Maker profile, the promo pop-up and the Collection section.
- Image shape: the section default, Adapt to the images (no crop), or a fixed shape such as portrait, square or landscape.
- Image display: Cropped to fill the frame or Whole image, never cropped.
- Image position (left or right) where a picture sits beside text.
Product card images have their own settings: see Product cards.
Focal points
When an image is cropped, Clean Art keeps the focal point you set in Shopify in view. In the product or Files, select the image > Edit > Focal point.
Alt text
Describe each image for people using screen readers: what the work shows, not "image of". Add alt text in the product's media or in Content > Files. Product images without alt text use the product title.
