Add your artworks

Set up products so Clean Art can show sizes, frames, artist pages, artwork facts and the true-size wall preview.

Every artwork is a normal Shopify product. A few conventions let the theme do more with it.

1. Create the artwork fields (once)

  1. Open Settings > Custom data > Products.
  2. Add the fields in the Artwork data reference with the namespace cleanart, for example cleanart.medium and cleanart.year.
  3. For each field, set Storefront access to Public read.

The fields feed the artwork facts on the product page, the Artwork details block, the Product story section, the printable details sheet and the wall preview.

2. Add a product for each work

  • Title: the work's title, such as Breezing Up (A Fair Wind).
  • Vendor: the artist's name. Artist pages, More by this artist and the artist filter all match on the vendor, so spell it the same way everywhere.
  • Images: any size works; Shopify serves resized copies. About 2000 px on the long side is plenty. Add the work first, then details and room shots.
  • Type and tags: use product type for the medium group (Painting, Print, Photograph) and tags for themes (Landscape, Portrait). Find your piece and filters can use them.

3. Sizes

Add an option named Size. Name each value with its longest side, for example Small, 30 cm, Medium, 50 cm, Large, 70 cm. The wall preview reads that length and works out the other side from the picture's shape.

You can also give both sides in the value, such as 50 x 70 cm (width x height). For exact sizes, set the variant fields cleanart.width_cm and cleanart.height_cm; they take priority over the value's name.

4. Frames and mats (optional)

  • Add an option named Frame with values such as No frame, Oak, Black, White. Values that start with No, None or Without show no frame in the preview.
  • Add an option named Mat the same way if you sell mats.
  • In the product page's See it on a wall section, add Frame and Mat color blocks with the same names. Choosing a frame in the preview selects the option, and the price follows.

5. Artwork details

Fill in the cleanart fields on each product: artist, year, medium, width and height, edition, accession number and credit line. Empty fields are simply hidden.

Importing many works

Use a Shopify product CSV. Add one column per field, named like Metafield: cleanart.medium [single_line_text_field]. See Artwork data for every column name.
